Future Perfect

Focusing on work a bit too much in the past few months -- shooting short news stories, developing an environmental kids show(!) and most recently -- traveling to Yellowknife, NWT to cover a conference. It was beautiful and cold, and sadly too cloudy for the Northern Lights.

I'm coming close to my January internship at The National Film Board, and I've got to start thinking about dressing for an office job. An awesome office job where I'm surrounded by creative wonderful people, but an office job nonetheless.

I really feel like I have a good feel on what my person style is nowadays -- probably because I've cycled through so much clothing that ended up being so wrong for me. I've acquired several wonderful pieces in the past month or so -- mostly staples that I've been wearing every other day. A black lace skirt, a pair of military green chinos and a cozy white fisherman wool sweater ($200 all together, so I didn't break the bank). I realized about a month ago that my winter wardrobe consisted only of a navy blue zip up hoodie from several years ago. A brutal error...

I will post more, I promise. Especially more photos. My frugal no-fun nature has finally paid off and I bought a Canon T3i. As you can imagine, I've made sure my cats have been properly documented in glorious 1080p during all their waking hours. Soon I will release my magnum opus, a bleak and revealing look at the sinister life of a housecat.

Last night I went to to Chinatown with my boyfriend and attended the Mid Autumn Moon Festival Celebration at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden. It was really wonderful - live music, tea, moon cake, fortune telling and an incredibly bright full moon.

Afterwards we visited the Night Market, which was on it's very last day. It's one of our favourite places to go on summer nights. We shared a take out box of chow mein, a green apple bubble tea, and bought home several stalks of lucky bamboo.

Introducing my $6 bikini, which I bought in a rush when I realized I would rather go swimming than be self conscious and shy, which is more of my usual game.

Since wearing a bathing suit at the beach isn't as terrifying as I originally had thought, I think I'll look into a more retro suit for next summer. The last few weeks have been the hottest of summer (September, go figure!) - but I really, truly can't wait for fall.

I've already got a box for summer clothes sitting by my closet. Watching...waiting. As soon as the tempature drops under 16°C they're GONE.

I spent the weekend in the production office supervising a language dub for the television show I work on. And when I say 'supervising' I mean lurking by the window and looking wistfully at the sun - and later, getting ice cream drumsticks for everyone.

Today my boyfriend and I went on a day long trek - first to eat lunch at a Mongolian BBQ place in town (which, if I were stuck on a desert island, is the exact type of food I'd chose to eat forever) -- and then going to the Van Dusen Botanical Gardens.

Even though I love the city, wandering through the forest and fields on a summer day feels like coming home. When I was young my sister and I lived in this big wooden house out on a mountain, where were had ten acres of wild to explore. I remember spending all the time I could outside - waking up before the sunrise and going to lean against dewy moss covered rocks and breathing early summer air. Now that summer is nearly over I'm planning on spending more time outside of the city this autumn, which is by far my favourite season for doing just about anything.

I've really started taking my body shape into account first and foremost when shopping for clothes. It seems like a painfully easy concept, but in practice I often drool over shift dresses, boxy blazers and oversized knit sweaters -- all which I've tried on multiple times, only to the exactly same disappointing results.

What makes it worse is I have a younger sister who fits all these styles perfectly -- she has a model's build and can easily borrow anything in my closet, and then go straight to the boy's department and look fantastic in everything there as well.

But, genetics willing, I dress for curves. Nipped in waists, pencil skirts and belted coats. If I stray from this general shape I find myself swimming in fabric and looking pretty undesirably shapeless.

This season I'm preparing for two back-to-back jobs in the film industry (the first, as a Social Media Director on an environmental show, and the second an intern at The National Film Board) - which means I have to fill the professional gaps in my wardrobe and start dressing the part.

THE LIST

1. White Button Up Shirt

White button up shirts have always been much harder item to acquire than they should be -- I struggled against see through fabric, the 'gaping bust button' syndrome and totally losing my waist in boyish cuts. The solution -- ditch starchy cotton and opt for a more flowing draping fabric. Even though this shirt looks straight it's surprisingly curve-friendship and easy to belt or to tuck into a high waisted skirt.

2. Soft Black Dress Pants

My secret goal here is to find pants that are as comfortable as pajamas, disguised as a work and weekend wardrobe staple. Again, soft fabric like this cotton twill/wool jersey with a very streamline shape is extremely charitable when it comes to hips. Pants that are actually enjoyable to wear (not super tight and stiff) means they'll be in rotation much more often during the week. And the neutral nature of black pants also means that people probably won't notice if you wear them two days in a row...

3. Blazer

For me finding a blazer is a torturous hunt. Often I find something that looks decent, but I can't button it entirely or really move in it, or if something fits in the chest it's much too big everywhere else. The solution: shrunken jackets that are cropped and hit at the waist are extremely flattering, or a jacket that hits at the hip or above in a very tailored and slim cut, made in a more generous and flowing fabric.

4. Lingerie

There's some magical power that good lingerie holds -- even worn secretly under a pair of sweat pants and a hoodie, there's this extra push of confidence knowing you have them on. Like a good luck charm. There are so many shaping products on the market now, which makes wearing sheer and very body conscious pieces a lot easier -- but I don't believe in completely manipulating your body in the name of fashion. Functional and classic with a hint of old Hollywood glamour is exactly what I pine over.

Forgive my absence - I've spent the past month locked away on the set of a television show, sitting behind a monitor and writing down continuity notes in a very large binder. My contract is done at the end of this week, and I celebrated my upcoming freedom by visiting Parksville on Vancouver Island with my family.

I think I blinded everyone on the beach with my deathly pallor, but I had tons of fun getting salt in my hair, and learning how to not be terrified of the little crabs that are everywhere on the beach.

This month I'm planning a road trip down Washington and the Oregon coast -- lots of camping, and exploring little towns and parks I've never been to. I'm going to stow my laptop along, so that means less sixty hour work weeks, and more updates. Hurrah!

I'm moving in three days -- out of the city and back to the island I grew up on. I got a job on a children's television show, which takes place over July and August -- at which point I'll come back to the city for September and find a new place.

I love moving. As a child my family moved constantly - renting always gave us the freedom for variety and escape. Every two years or so we would pack up and try another house in a different part of the city, or in the country, or by the ocean. Never anything terribly fancy, but these times were a highlights of my youth -- exploring the large empty rooms upon arrival -- the entire house always seemed so much bigger with nothing in it. Discovering the garden, the neighbourhood -- everything was so fresh and promising.

When I moved out on my own, I continued to follow my nomadic inclinations, but to a more frequent degree. I tried sublets -- living in the comfortable unfamiliarity of another's home for months at a time -- and avoided leases like the plague. Still, the one thing I always find myself missing, especially now realizing that together my boyfriend and I barely have enough possessions to fill the back of a van, is a more personal space -- something I created. I'm so used to white walls, spareness -- not making commitments even to put up art or posters on the wall.

Lately I've been pining over photos of interior design -- minimalistic rooms that are comfortable and convey the intentions and personality of the one who lives there. When I move back to Vancouver this fall, I plan to spend time making my new apartment an actual home -- not just a place of temporary residence. I don't plan on settling down anytime soon, but I want to invest in elements that I can take with me -- and really brings a sense of permanence to the next place I live.

Quick update from today -- hosted a movie screening tonight, all short films by local emerging directors in Vancouver. It went very well - we're going to make it a monthly installation. I made dozens of cupcakes and a boat load of pink sugared popcorn. My kitchen is covered in goo.

Quick photo -- my hair is finally growing out, after many years of failed attempts (usually foiled by watching films with pixie cut heroines (Vivre Sa Vie, Rosemary's Baby, Amelie) and then running out and ruining all of my efforts.

Next week I'm doing a shoot with a salon, and they're going to be dying my hair autumn-y red. I'm excited!

I'm moving in two weeks, so I'm giving my wardrobe a huge overhaul. In the past year I've reduced the size by at least half, and I've never been happier. My closet used to be stuffed full, and now looking the twenty or so pieces that I have up on matching wooden hangers (!) is extremely exciting for an organizaholic like me.

At first I aimed to only get basics -- a pressed white collar shirt, black slim tailored pants, flats --- but then I realized that without unique pieces mixed it, there's no personality in it. Even though my wardrobe has been building very slowly (from lack of funds) I've really enjoyed giving a lot of thought to what I'm adding.

VV Mentor Profile: Sarah

Ten days done, twenty to go! June is flying by at our pop-up shop. We sat down with Sarah, a mentor at Velveteen Vintage, and asked her some questions about the store.

VV: How did you get involved with Velveteen Vintage?

Sarah: My aunt, Sandra Todd, who is the one who created the concept of this store and has put an incredible amount of time into making it happen, let me know about it. I was really excited and interested, and started helping her a few months ago – mostly sorting through the hundreds of donated. clothing items that we were planning to sell. Now I work at the store, and am having a lot of fun taking part!

VV: Do you a background in retail, or fashion?

Sarah: I’ve had a fashion blog for the last few years, and frequently write about how to look good and not spend hundreds of dollars. This store really appeals to me because not only is everything twenty dollars and under, it’s all in excellent condition and comes from great clothing lines. Besides that, I’ve worked in consignment stores, which really taught me the value of things, and gave me a good knowledge of brands.

VV: What’s one big thing you’ve done for the store?

Sarah: I created the ‘Cat Wall’! It’s basically one big wall in the store that has about a dozen paintings of cats — everyone who works there has contributed to it. People really seem to love it, every time someone comes into the store, it puts a smile on their face.

VV: What has been your best find at Velveteen Vintage?

Sarah: (laughs) Ah, working there every day makes me want to take half the store home! The best thing I’ve found is this amazing vintage silk strapless dress — I tried it on and it fit like it was made just for me. I love it because I can wear it casually, over a white shirt, or under a cardigan — or dressed up. As soon as I add heels and a clutch it becomes instantly fancy!

I've been working on a boutique with my aunt -- she's put together an entire store formed around the idea of hiring youth (14-17), paying them an awesome wage and giving them retail experience. They also get to work together to alter and redesign clothing and sell their art. Exciting!

We won a store front in an awesome warehouse in Vancouver where the store will be for the month of June. We're selling vintage and designer clothing AND everything is under $20. If you're in the neighbourhood stop by!

So, happy early Mother's Day, Mom! Thank you for being wonderful and incredibly talented and teaching me to be a better writer/filmmaker/organizer/yard saler/public speaker/daughter, and accepting that my penmanship and art skills (and anything else to do with motor control) will never ever be as good as yours. :)

Okay, I admit. The reason I haven't been posting any waywts is because I've been dressing like a total scrub. Around this time of the year when winter stops being romantic and starts being cold and wet, I recede into the lazy world of repeated outfits and comfort items.

But, I also haven't been posting often because of two other reasons:
1) I've been busy at work with my brand new film production company.
2) I've been getting FIT.

Two of my resolutions this year were to stop being miserable at minimum wage jobs, and also to get into awesome shape. These are seriously the kind of resolutions I make ever year, and usually last for a few weeks, before I return to my old weaselly ways. BUT NOT THIS YEAR!

Right now I've been hired to edit (and will soon be direct!) PSAs for various companies around Vancouver. Okay, it's not exactly akin my my dream of making sci-fi and psychological thrillers, but it's a real (and fun!) job that doesn't involve restocking clothing racks and mindlessly frittering away my day.

This upcoming year I've also got several projects lined up, starting next month where my boyfriend and I have been hired to fly up north to film a series of short documentaries.

Anyway, I promise to post more/wear more clothes/be interesting in the following months to come. PROMISE.

In the distant future (one filled with lots of money that I can spend to my heart's content) I've vowed that my next two fragrance purchases will be Craft by Icelandic designer Andrea Maack, and Stephen Jones by Stephen Jones and my always favourite, Comme Des Garcons.

Both are incredible, unique and futuristic scents that I cannot get enough of. Craft smells like cold metal, ice and cedar wood - and Stephen Jones of violet leaf, meteorite and magma.

I'm making good on my new year resolutions - so far I'm three days into 'eat healthy and exercise' and today I cleaned my apartment. I mean, not just tidied -- I had heaping bags of paper and plastic to recycle after I was through.

I keep slimming my possessions down, and it feels good to have less clutter. The more I do it the more I truly know what's important to me, and what just has phantom sentiment.

I can't wait till I have money to buy furniture. I have a list of things I want - ever growing. I know I won't start over-buying when I can afford things. I really love multipurpose pieces - they're so clean and futuristic. Soon I'll be moving into a one bedroom, so there will be a lot more space to play with.

What to Pack: Spring Travel

This March I'll be traveling for two weeks with my boyfriend and sister - first to West Virginia, to visit my dad's side of the family, and then off to New York, where I was born.

Even though it's a few months away, I've already started scheming. I absolutely love planning trips, especially the duller parts that most people usually put off. Finding dirt cheap airfairs, researching hotels, planning the perfect combination of clothes to pack -- My goal is always spend as little money as possible (but still be comfortable in transit and in accommodation) and pack only the bare essentials.

As you can imagine, I'm a devout believer of only taking a carry on bag. After a six hour flight it's such a good feeling to just walk out of the airport, instead of wasting time waiting at the luggage carousal. Not having to drag suitcases all over the city is a definite perk as well.

So, I've planned out a sort of 'rough draft' of what I'll be bringing with me, clothing wise. I don't own the pieces I've listed, but it serves as sort of a guide. The idea is to take pieces that will all work together, to create the most outfits with the least items of clothing.

Just by looking at this set I can easily count out fourteen separate outfits. While I'm traveling I'll be wearing the heaviest things (Dress Shoes, Black Pants, Button Up Shirt, Grey Cardigan and Trench Coat) which leaves me with only six items packed. Six light items.

I'm on a leather skirt rampage. This thing looks good with literally every top I own, and it's thick and structured enough that I can even wear dresses under it on colder days. Best purchase of 2010!

Also, I dyed my hair! Even though it's naturally dark brown, I've always been scared to go black because I didn't want it to look too fake. But...I like it! It makes me want to wear lots of mascara and red lipstick.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas! I've been very busy. Yesterday I had around fifteen family members packed into my 400-ish square foot bachelor apartment. It was terrifying. It was fun. It resulted in a large number of cookies, appetizers and bottles of wine left over. So, all's well that ends well!

I was cleaning up my overflowing bookcase/dvd rack, when I came across a most important book, and realized I never made a post about it!

The Summer of 2008: I was blonde, wearing black throughout the hottest days and about to embark on an epic West Coast Trip, from Vancouver Island to San Fransisco.

Sidney Lo, of Superfuture and photography fame, came and stayed at my parent's house for a few days, where I was currently living. He was working on his book 'Taking Pictures of People Who Take Pictures of Themselves,' which as your can guess, consisted of fashion portraits.

I got my copy months and months ago, and loved it dearly. I've met/stayed with/bonded warmly with most of the people in the book, so it reads much like my high school year book would have, had I been popular.

I spent the weekend out of town doing Christmas things with my boyfriend's family -- it was really nice to have a little vacation.

This morning we caught the early train and rode into Vancouver while the sun was just coming up. The entire trip was beautiful, but hard to photograph because of the movement plus the reflection of the window...I managed to get a few shots as we stopped to pick up more passengers.

This morning I was cruising AirBnB as I often do, and I came across an amazing flat in Berlin.

I love looking at different apartments from different places - to get a sense of the design and personality of that city.

The pale floors are amazing, as are the accents of green from the plants and red from the chairs...ahh. So clean and perfect. I also love the idea of a bed on a platform...

My cousin was just signed to a big modeling agency here in Vancouver! She just turned fifteen and is already 5'9. I'm jealous/very proud.

My mom is Cree, and my little sister and I are literally the only people in the family who are pale and show no evidence of our First Nations heritage. At least at family reunions we're easy to spot in the photos (we're the ones like...glowing white!).

I'm super excited for my cousin. I'm weaseling my way in so if she has to go to Milan I'll go with her to be her tag-along...uh...her 'coach'.

I'm currently counting the days until I move into a spacious one bedroom apartments in my building. In October my boyfriend and I managed to nab a bachelor suite in an excellently located and perfectly priced apartment here in Vancouver. Now we have our names on the waiting list for a bigger place, which wonderfully will only cost an additional $50 - $100 a month.

So, buying furniture is being put on hold until I have an idea of what our new place will look like. Regardless, I've been pouring over amazing photos of interior design and dreaming of seriously spending some time decorating.

Growing up, my family rented our homes and by the time I moved out of my parent's house when I was seventeen, I'd lived in fifteen separate houses (don't ask!). This next move will be my twenty forth - I've taken on my family's nomadic way of life. Terrible, isn't it? Honestly though, I love the variety of moving around.

But...because I moved so much I never got a chance to actually personalize my space. My room was always just the bare minimum - and often I left it half-unpacked for half my time there. I'm excited to finally have a chance to make my own home.

Right now the incredibly apartment from Kitka is, as usual, making me incredibly jealous. I have a serious desire to paint our new floors white...

I've been wanting to make an updated more 'adult' version, and the DIY Project posted by The Brick House has pushed me over the edge.

A New Start

Over the past few days I finished the terribly drawn out wardrobe purge that I started six months ago.

As time went on it became easier to let go and get rid of things, and two giant garbage bag later(one for charity, one to consign) I now have around thirty items in my wardrobe (including shoes) and many obvious gaps.

I feel that through this process I finally have a hold on my preferences of personal fashion, and instead of buying what seems for two entirely different styles I can find a happy medium and work towards a capsule wardrobe.

My first post of this blog was about how I had a hard time combining my two loves: the cinched waist loveliness of the 50's and 60's, and the minimalism and beauty of avant-garde design.

I've been watching a host of French New Wave films, and began to realize that this style is something closer to what I've been striving for.

It combines everything I want: compact coordinating wardrobes where quality and fit triumph over trends and quantity, silhouettes that always retain a sense of femininity, and because of a smaller amount of clothing is purchased, 'statement items' can be saved for removing any fear of 'bland minimalism'.

Since weeding out my wardrobe it's much easier to see what my actual style is - what I love to wear, and what I need. I feel like I can actually search out things now instead of just blindly shopping and buying whatever looks good.

Today I was wandering up and down Main Street, dropping off resumes listlessly (coffee shops, toy stores, etc), when I came across this clothing store that I remembered from my initial 'exploring my new neighbourhood!' walk, a few weeks back.

I went in to apply and I ended up having an on-the-spot interview followed by an on floor training session.

IT WAS SO MUCH FUN! Honestly, a job where you can wear cool clothes, listen to cool music and discuss fashion and style with customers is like a dream. I've just spent the summer like a hermit, editing on a computer at all hours of the day and night, and it was such a delight to actually be around people. The only downfall is that I'm probably going to spend most of my paycheque in store. AH, it's worth it.

Being around clothes and well dressed people all day has really put my autumn-fashion-love into a frenzy. Here is a beautiful hand-crafted mashup of my current inspirations:

I'm here today to share the most delicious recipe EVER with you. Every now and then I go on a health kick and start cooking up a storm. I just made this and it was so wonderful, I thought I'd have to share it with the world!

Insanely Delicious Apple-Chocolate Bread

Step 1: Preheat oven to 325F.

Step 2: Mix together, in a large bowl:
2 Cups All Purpose Flour
2 TSPs Baking Soda
1/4th Cup Cocoa Powder
1 TSP Cornstarch
1 Cup Sugar
To taste: Cinnamon, Cloves, Nutmeg, Allspice, Ginger
Dash of Salt

Step 3: Mix together, in a smaller bowl:
2 Cups Applesauce
1/8 Cup Canola Oil
Optional: Raisins, Pecans, Walnuts or Chocolate Chips

Step 4: MIX!
Add the wet ingrediants to the dry. Mix until well blended.

Step 5: COOOOK!
Pour into loaf pan lined with parchment. Cook for 1hr or until a toothpick comes out clean. Makes one loaf!

Today was possibly the last day of sun and warmth in Vancouver. Tomorrow it starts raining and then autumn will descend on the city like flies on stink.

I love the fall. It's less exciting this year because I'm not back at school, and let's face it: getting back-to-school clothes really gives a definiate start to the season. However, now that the leaves are changing colour and are all crunchy under my feet I find myself getting into the spirit!

I made pumpkin muffins last night, and tonight I'm going to bake a Dutch Apple Cake. So...good. I need to start making cooking posts.

Today is my 23rd birthday!

Last night I had Thanksgiving Dinner with my boyfriend and our friend Robyn - a sort of 'stranded in the city' concept. I made pumpkin pie and sweet potato cassarole, Robyn made salad and brought Chat-en-Oeuf wine and Matt made butternut squash soup (from scratch!). We stayed up very late telling horrifying ghost stories.

This morning I slept in and had breakfast in bed(!) and later, Matt took me out to a wonderful Japanese resteruant in our neighbourhood. Now he's on a dessert run while I sit warmly in our new apartment making cocoa in anticipation of his return.

Good news everyone!

I've been busy lately and in the very near future I'll have lots to show-and-tell with you. WHAT, YOU DEMAND?! Well, first of all today is the first day of MOVING DAY. Yes, it's true. If you don't know, I currently live in a shanty of a basement suite, and although I adore my roommates and the dirt cheap rent, I don't adore all of the...other perks...of the place. Examples: Woodland bums, crackhead parties, the occasional poop in the dryer -- you understand.

The second, I have five rolls of film queued up to be developed and posted. I just need to sell my left leg and arm to make up the money for the processing (damn expensive Canada!).

Last but not least, I had the opportunity to act in a short film/music video last week. I played a 80's neo-noir femme fatale with a leather jacket and purple lips. I KILLED A MAN. That'll be posted very soon.

My third roll of film! This one I got developed to CD at Walmart. It was $10, as compared to London Drug's $12.50. Walmart's resolution was 4x6", so I might be sticking with LD so I can just print the photos straight from the CD if I want bigger prints.

I am going to learn how to develop my own film soon, honest!

I'm moving into a bachelor soon, hopefully at the end of the month if I get lucky. There's this magical building on Main Street, here in Vancouver, that my cousin lives in where the rent is insanely cheap.

I house sit for her sometimes and I love the area - literally in the midst of a couple dozen $3 breakfast joints and coffee shops, mid century furniture consignment stores and somehow it turns into a beautiful (cat friendly!!) neighbourhood a block away - complete with giant oak trees and brick elementary schools. Also it's only fifteen minutes from downtown. A studio opened up for Oct. 1st, so I'm going to go search it out. Apparently it's very large (500+ square feet). I'M THERE.

I've been looking at photos of small apartments for inspiration. I want to start new - to get rid of clutter and things I don't need. To buy sparsely and with quality and function (and design!) in mind. Right now I just want to duplicate this bachelor:

Photo Booth DAY 2.

Back at work. I gone dun my hair. That means I woke up looking like Marla from Fight Club and said: ENOUGH. Then I brushed it in a less than attentive manner and used a handful of bobby pins to bully it into submission.

During this entire summer I've been struggling to get out-of-school-debt, and I've limited myself to buying a very small amount of summer clothes in my seriously winter-heavy-wardrobe. I ended up buying three dresses, a skirt, a t-shirt and two pairs of sunglasses (cheap, and now broken!). I also got a spring-summer-autumn navy trench coat for $80 (from $300) which I truly love and magically pulls any outfit together.

Along with this, inspired by 'bringing in the new' as well as moving into an apartment with significantly less space for my sprawling clothing collection, I also seriously edited my closet. And when I say that I mean that I got rid of HALF of it. Donated, sold, gave away - etc.

That being said, once I can get my act together to list my left over designer wares on ebay, I will have a little bit of money for some autumn clothing (and space in my closet to put them there)!!

I'm very passionately into smart, small and versatile wardrobes. My fashion wet-dream would be to have clothing that all can coexist with each other - being able to wear any cardigan with any dress, pants, blouse and so forth in a complimentary pallet. Seriously, I'm drooling right now.

Next post will be less words more lustful photos of what I'll be saving for, or hunting to find a similar and cheaper version of the very second the season changes.

Still no camera. Soon, soon. I am going insane without one.

My hair is growing out so slowly. As it does it gets crazier and thicker. On the way to work this morning some craggy woodland bum called me out from his slumped morning perch 'Hey Bob Dylan what songs you be singing?' It was either on account of my men's sunglasses and insane hair, or that he may have been tripping balls on bum drugs.

Regardless, I took that as a hint to brush my hair before work. Thank you, woodland bum.

Eating Out Vancouver

I adore living in Vancouver. Growing up on a nearby island with the motto 'Victoria: Home of the newly wed and nearly dead" made me dream throughout my childhood about moving to the city. After living here for two years I'm starting to explore places I've never been before - and more importantly, eat out restaurants off the beaten path.

Benkei Ramen
1741 Robson St - Under $10

With a simple menu that offers several different types of ramen, this is a restaurant that haunts my dreams in the most delicious way possible. I go through bi-weekly cravings for the Shoyu Ramen, which is soy-sauce based and served with bamboo-shoots, spinach and nori.

The Foundation
2301 Main - $10 - $15

Okay, yeah - this place is absolutely chock full of hipsters. I get it, I get it. Even the staff look at you with half glazed eyes and gesture towards your table in a too-cool zombie way. But, the food. THE FOOD. The is the first restaurant I've rushed home after eating at and tried to figure out the recipe of what I'd ordered, and written clumsily on a soiled paper napkin. This is addictive good food. Vegetarian may turn some people off, but I've been there with a host of meat eaters and they've all loved it. My monthly fix is the Spicy Peanut Pasta -- which consists of tofu, cauliflower, spinach, spiral pasta and the most delicious peanut sauce. Good lord.

Japadog
530 Robson St - Under $10

Japadog was originally a tiny hot dog cart that drew dozens of customers, filing down Burrard Street in a hungry line, much to my great displeasure. I usually breezed by it because of the wait, though every time I did something little died inside of me, lusting after their delicious wares. Luckily a store front Japadog has opened on Robson Street with the same food and a much shorter wait time. I usually order a Veggie Terimayo which is a veggie dog with teriyaki, mayonnaise and wakame seaweed. My only qualm is their tofu-dogs are far too realistic. Last time I went I had the vegetarian nightmare of 'did I just eat meat?!' and no, no I had not.

T&T Market - Take Out!
181 Keefer Street - Under $10

Okay, not a restaurant - the T&T Market is a big grocery store that caters to asian ingredients. They also have a take-out section with an entire wall of bento boxes, sushi and a variety of other offerings. I often go here because of it's proximity to the skytrain and it's speedy tastiness. I usually order a seaweed salad, inari and cucumber rolls. They have meat too, don't worry. LOTS of meat. And gooey-ducks. If you don't know what those are, look them up. It'll change your life.

3096 Main Street - $10 - $20

Specializing in comfort food, Burgoo offers soups, sandwiches and modern classics - such as Butter Chicken, Macaroni & Cheese and an assortment of fondues. With an with 'log-cabin' interior, complete with a wood burning fireplace, this may be my favourite place to go when winter rolls around. Menu items that I adore include their Carrot Coconut Soup, Ratatouille and the Gooey Cheese Grillers (which, being lactose intolerant, is good enough to take lactose-pills for!) How unappealing a note to end this review on!

I just spent the last few days working from home and GOOD LORD am I easily distracted. I try so hard...

Here's an example of a typical day battling with the constant urge to do something other than work.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 20TH 2010
7:00AM - Wake up with my boyfriend as he continuously hits the snooze button before he has to go to work. I laugh and boast wildly about being able to stay in and pledge not the leave the bed once today.

8:00AM - After he leaves I leap out of bed, frantically making toast and tea, and then read the newspaper. I start to do the five-star-difficulty sudoku but after realizing I've done something terribly TERRIBLY wrong, I scribble it out in a huff.

8:30AM - Edit. A montage people making body noises for an art exhibit.

9:30AM - I paint my nails, after chipping one from vigorously hitting hot keys in Final Cut Pro. I paint my toes too. Then I wander in the bathroom and put on a clay face mask.

10:00AM - Back to work.

10:30AM - A fly enters the room and my cats start to make suicidal leaps of ledges, trying to catch it. I watch and try to film it, but the lighting is all wrong. I turn on all of the lamps in the bedroom - still not good! I run into the living room and grab a light but returning the room I realize the unthinkable has happened as I see one of my cats swallowing the fly. Disgusting.

11:30AM - LUNCH TIME. I wash a dish. Then I give up and grab a nectarine and crackers.

12:00PM - "okay, now I'm really going to work. honestly."

12:30PM - I phone a psychic and fail at booking a reading over the weekend. (hey, I have a gift certificate).

1:00PM - ACTUALLY WORKING NOW.

2:00PM - After singing aloud at an obnoxious volume for a least a half an hour I minimize my editing program and attempt to record a cover of "hallelujah". I fail at it miserably.

3:00PM - My computer crashes and I take it as a sign for a break. I organize all of the clothes I'm donating to Value Village - an excellent accomplishment.

3:45PM - I get distracted and start to look at blogs...leading me here...to write this list.

...I should get back to work.

Camera update: I am saving for a Canon Rebel T2i. It was a difficult choice between that and the Panasonic Lumix GH1, which when hacked, shoots in HD at a quality comparable to film stock (but only in three minute clips). HOWEVER, the photo ability of the GH1 was lacking, and with a heavy heart I turn my loyalty over to Canon (which tempts, because it's also half the price).

While I save my pennies, however, I bought a Nikon GH film camera to play around on. I am extremely excited. My friend has been using this model for years with mouth watering results (admittedly with more skill then I have) and I would love to practice shooting on film.

Thank you everyone for the sympathy in my camera situation! It's a terrible, terrible thing. But having owned a piece of equipment for several years with no previous disasters or loss is a good...yes? The next camera I have I will treat as an over protective mother might, smothering her young. That's the plan.

In lieu of photographs, I will paint you a beautiful picture with my words alone.

Actually, I'll just post a few inspiration photos, and a few paragraphs of the short story/soon to be short film I'm working on.

A couple paragraphs:

I'm working on a script right now about a small southern town in the 1970's, which was home to a cult that converted much of the population, and then committed mass suicide, promising 'a better life on another planet'. The film follows the son of the cult leader, who refused to go along with his father's plan, now an outcast of the community.

I decided to write it into a short story first, to get a good feel for it. It's an interesting way to go about cementing an idea!

In the place between waking and sleep he’d hear it, never quite real enough to cause him to rise from bed and search for a source, but something that left him with a lingering feeling of regret that would stay with him throughout the day.

Afterwards he’d lie in the stifling heat of the darkness, pressed up like a wall against his body, and desperately try to remember his dreams. As he drifted off he’d often imagine the shape of his father, taking up nearly the entire doorway into his bedroom.

With hot breath that smelled of leather and burnt wood, he’d whisper into his son’s ear: “You coming boy?”

Dreams like that, he didn’t fall back asleep after.

I'm pretty sure my camera was stolen or lost - eg: in my bag one moment, and realized it's absence in a sudden flurry of horror - and never seen again.

Ah, this is terrible. I've had my darling Nikon D50 since I was 18 - I saved for it for months. I guess the next camera I need is one that shoots HD Video, but that'll take a lot more saving.

I am actually really bummed out. I feel like my cat died. I took photos with that thing almost every day...I keep hoping maybe it's under a pile of clothes, but I know that in my heart it's gone forever.

Comme Des Garcon - White (Eau de Toilette)

After ordering a plethora of samples from Luckyscent.com, I fell in love with this particular scent and when pay day rolled around I visited on of my favourite Vancouver haunts The Perfume Shoppe, and purchased it.

GOOD LIFE CHOICE.

I am a huge fan of unisex fragrances that are unique in nature, and White is no exception. On me it smells predominantly of cinnamon, vanilla and cedar wood. It's perfect as a summer perfume and stays close to the skin without being too over powering.

Next I'm saving up for Stephen Jones x Comme Des Garcon which I am absolutely in love with, but currently is out of my reach price-wise. It smells of violets, metal and meteorites. One day...one day...

I get to do what I love to do best - sit around in the dark being terribly asocial and snickering every now to myself for unexplained reasons. Yesterday I put together a montage of guys falling off of horses at a rodeo to bluegrass music.

I love my job.

Just bought this at half price. It's the first perfume I've ever purchased for myself, and after going through a sample at record speed a few months ago, I think it's a good choice.

I haven't bought anything frivolous for months and months - but this is a semi-celebration gift for the impending launch of my film production company.

Hello everyone!

Sorry for the two month leave of absence. It seems like when big things happen in life, they all occur at the exactly same time and I'm in a very different place now.

I'm finally getting things back in order though, and am planning to start posting more on this blog (because I miss it!).

What are your "tactics" to making your blog successful, reader-friendly and approachable to many?

Networking! If you have a fashion blog the key is the join (and regularly update) as many different groups and sites as possible. The Fashion Spot, Lookbook, Chictopia, Superfuture - etc. The more people that know your face the more hits you should have on your blog.

That being said, a clean layout is always nice to look at. Also remember to incorporate your own unique personality into your writing and posts. Good luck! =)

What are your favorite clothes and accessories that you have?

Right now my favourite items of clothing are: a light weight navy blue trench coat with a classic cut and a metallic sheen, a pinstriped grey somewhat disheveled menswear inspired shirt-dress and my black Yohji Yamamoto creepers.

Two things I will always love are versatility and a twist on a classic wear-anytime item.

Do you have style icons?

I tend to become inspired by characters in film - specially French New Wave of the 1960's, classic films of the 1950's and Sci-Fi. Anytime a character's wardrobe becomes an extension of their own personality and life I'm instantly enamored.

Some specific films I love, clothing-wise are: Bladerunner, Vivre sa vie, Breathless, Badlands, 8½, Rebel Without A Cause and Bonnie and Clyde.

What inspires you?

I think the limitless imagination of people and what they create is an amazing and inspiring prospect.

On a more abstract note, I'm inspired by modes of transportation (trains and boats especially), suitcases and travel, hotels, lists, giant run down buildings, exploration and adventure...violins....aged photographs, notebooks...

I love hearing about strange news stories and urban legends. And short snippet of conversation and being curious to as what's happening in the lives of others. People who don't just talk, but listen. The smell outside right before it rains.

What are your favorite books/movies/music etc.?

I love far too many things to count -- but here's a heavily edited list:

5'6 and a half! I always lie and say I'm 5'7, but for you: the truth.

What's your favorite color if you have one?

Yellow, grey or blue.

Do you know of any good sort of all-purpose makeup, like a powder?

I'm insanely pale, so I grab hold to any foundation that vaguely matches my skin tone and hold on to it for dear life. I'm actually very surprised with the quality of L'Oreal Bare Naturale Powdered Mineral Foundation. I used it for a while last year and loved it and then migrated to more expensive powders, only to return. It works by itself and over liquid foundation.
